DOJ drops request for IP addresses from Trump resistance site

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is dropping its controversial request for visitor IP addresses related to an anti-Trump website. The government said in a brief released Tuesday that it has "no interest" in the 1.3 million IP addresses related to the website disruptj20.org. It says it is solely focused on information that could constitute evidence related to criminal rioting on Inauguration Day.

Trump team orders scientists to stop research into health effects of coal mining

Donald Trump’s Department of the Interior has told the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to stop studying the effects of coal mining on health.  A branch of the interior department – the office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement – was funding an inquiry into the potential correlation between increased human health risks and living near surface coal mine sites in Central Appalachia.

2 charged after 2 stabbed bodies found in plastic tubs of chemicals

Bail was set at $2 million for two western Montana residents who are charged in the stabbing deaths of two people whose bodies were found in plastic tubs of chemicals in the basement of a Missoula home. Tiffanie Pierce, 23, and Augustus Standingrock, 26, were arrested last week and made their initial appearances in Justice Court on Monday. Both are charged with deliberate homicide and accountability to deliberate homicide for the deaths of a man and a woman on Aug. 17. They did not enter pleas.

A Canadian man had to punch a black bear in the nose to force it outside after it followed a toddler into a British Columbia family's home. Froude was home with her two sons when she heard her two-year-old yell: "Mom, look!" She turned and saw a black bear walking through her home's sliding glass doors. Ms Froude locked herself and her children in a bedroom while a family friend banged pots and chased it with a chair.

Trump rejects use of emergency authority to help coal plants

The Trump administration has denied a coal company’s request to invoke a little-used authority to stop coal-fired power plants from closing. Murray Energy Corp. CEO Bob Murray, an outspoken advocate for coal and a close ally to President Trump, had asked for a federal order to stop a major utility from closing any plants, even if it goes bankrupt. Such an order from the Energy Department would have, among other effects, exempted FirstEnergy Solutions Corp.’s plants from numerous environmental standards.

California: 75% of Black Boys Can’t Read or Write Properly, Says Department of Education

Seventy-Five percent of all black males in California classrooms failed to meet reading and writing standards on the most recent round of testing, according to data from the state Department of Education. More than half of black boys scored in the lowest category on the English portion of the test, trailing their female counterparts, and, according to the Los Angeles Daily News, the “disparity reflects a stubbornly persistent gender gap in reading and writing scores that stretches across ethnic groups.”
